Abstract:

With the proliferation of social media, it has increasingly become the focus of academic and societal attention. This paper, through a comprehensive review of relevant domestic and international research, specifically examines social media dependence within the context of improper social media usage, encompassing its concept, measurement, related research, and potential coping and intervention strategies. Building upon previous studies, the paper elucidates the concept of social media dependence and dissects its causes, including psychological needs, social comparison, media characteristics, and other multifaceted factors. Social media dependence exerts profound impacts on users’ self-esteem, social anxiety, interpersonal relationships, and mental health. Additionally, this paper summarizes the limitations of existing research and proposes directions for future studies, aiming to provide a reference for in-depth research and interventions concerning social media dependence.
