Pragmatic Analysis of Lin Yijin’s Versions of “A Farewell to Arms” from the Perspective of Relevance Translation Theory

本研究以关联翻译理论为视角，对林疑今翻译的《永别了，武器》进行了语用学分析，主要聚焦于对话部分的最佳关联性。通过对比原文与译文，探讨了林疑今在翻译过程中如何保持和再现原文的语用效果。研究发现，林疑今在处理小说中的对话时，巧妙地运用了关联理论中的明示推理，以求最大语境效果，使得译文不仅忠实于原文，还能在目标语言文化中实现最佳关联。具体而言，译者在词汇选择、句法结构以及语境假设等方面都做出了精细调整，以确保读者能够以最小的处理努力获得最大的语境效果。此外，本文还讨论了关联翻译理论在文学翻译中的应用价值，强调了译者在传达原文信息意图和交际意图时的重要性。通过对《永别了，武器》林疑今译本的具体分析，本文旨在揭示关联翻译理论在语用学视角下指导小说对话翻译的适用性和实用性。
This study adopts relevance translation theory as a framework to conduct a pragmatic analysis of Lin Yijin’s translation of A Farewell to Arms. The primary focus is on the dialogues and their optimal relevance. By comparing the original text with the translation, this research investigates how Lin Yijin preserves and reproduces the pragmatic effects of the original text throughout the translation process. The findings indicate that in addressing the dialogues within the novel, Lin Yijin adeptly employs explicit reasoning from relevance translation theory to maximize contextual effects, ensuring that the translation remains faithful to the original while achieving optimal relevance within the target language’s cultural context. Specifically, the translator makes precise adjustments concerning vocabulary selection, syntactic structure, and contextual assumptions, thereby enabling readers to derive maximum contextual effect with minimal processing effort. Furthermore, this paper discusses the practical value of relevance theory in literary translation, highlighting the crucial role of translators in conveying the informational and communicative intentions of the original text. Through a detailed analysis of Lin Yijin’s translation of A Farewell to Arms, this study aims to demonstrate the applicability and practicality of relevance translation theory in guiding the translation of novel dialogues from a pragmatic perspective.
