Discussions about death usually carry a sad or terrifying tone. However, the movie Coco, with death as its theme, has attracted a wide audience including children and provided excellent material for death education. The movie carefully constructs its plot and dialogues by skillfully using a series of conceptual metaphors, thus making the plotline and characters’ language in the movie more profound and complex. In this movie, understanding those metaphorical expressions is the core and key point to grasping the overall meaning of the movie. Taking the conceptual metaphor theory in cognitive linguistics as a framework, this paper conducts an in-depth analysis of the metaphors in the discourses about death and memory in the movie Coco, reveals how metaphors enhance the emotional depth and thematic expression of the movie, and explores the complex emotional and philosophical connotations behind them, so as to provide a cognitive basis for the audience to better understand the theme of the movie.
