Due to industrialization, immigration, and urban population expansion, tuberculosis became a pandemic in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, known as the “white plague”. However, unlike plagues such as the bubonic plague and cholera, tuberculosis’ unique symptoms, lengthy treatment process, and accompanying suffering met the aesthetic imagination and spiritual needs of Romanticists. Therefore, in 19th-century Europe, tuberculosis was romanticized as a symbol of nobility, sensitivity, and elegance, and became an important vehicle for exploring human nature, extolling emotions, reflecting on society and the value of life, and was endowed with rich cultural metaphors that profoundly influenced later cultural concepts and artistic expression.
