An Analysis of Four-Character Phrase Translation in the Film Farewell My Concubine from the Perspective of Skopos Theory

字幕翻译，特别是独具中文美学特征的四字格翻译，是中华文化对外传播的重要载体，同时这项翻译活动也给译者带来了巨大的挑战。如果处理得当能够准确传达电影的情感和文化内涵，反之可能会导致文化意义的丧失。基于目的论对中国电影史上的经典之作——《霸王别姬》中四字格词语的翻译分析既要尊重原著的语言美学，又要考虑受众的文化背景，才能有效传递其深层含义和情感表达，推动中国优秀影视作品走向世界。
Subtitle translation, particularly the translation of four-character phrases with distinct Chinese aesthetic features, plays a crucial role in the international dissemination of Chinese culture. However, this translation task presents a significant challenge for translators. When done well, it can accurately convey the emotions and cultural connotations of the film; if not, it may result in the loss of cultural meaning. Based on Skopos Theory, an analysis of the translation of four-character phrases in the Chinese cinematic classic Farewell My Concubine shows that in order to effectively convey its deep meanings and emotional expressions, the translator must respect the original language’s aesthetic while considering the cultural background of the audience. This approach can help promote outstanding Chinese films to the world.
