朱利安·巴恩斯是当代极具影响力的英国作家之一，曾四度获得布克奖提名，并于2011年凭借《终结的感觉》获得布克奖。因其创作手法新颖，风格多变，巴恩斯素有“英国文坛变色龙”之称。巴恩斯于1998年出版的长篇历史幻想小说《英格兰，英格兰》，呈现了老英格兰的日渐衰落、新英格兰的创建及女主人公玛莎不断追求自我建构，但最终却失落迷惘的一生。本文将从女性主义批评视角探究《英格兰，英格兰》中玛莎自我建构的过程及最终建构失败的原因。
Julian Barnes is one of the most influential British writers. He has been nominated for the Booker Prize four times and won the Booker Prize in 2011 for The Sense of an Ending. Julian Barnes is known as “the chameleon of English literature” due to his creative techniques and varied styles. His long historical fantasy novel England, England, which was published in 1998, presents the decline of old England, the creation of new England, and the life of Martha, the heroine, who keeps pursuing self-construction but is lost and confused in the end. This paper will explore Martha’s self-construction process and the tragic fate of the ultimate failure of self-construction in England, England from a feminist critical perspective.
