|
Abstract:
From immigrants’ activities of playing the musical instrument in Accordion Crimes, this paper will dig out the multiple meanings assembled and generated by the musical instrument in Proulx’s composition. Firstly, the musical instrument is a tie for the immigrants to prolong their ethnic culture and also a carrier of their cultural memory. Secondly, the musical instrument enjoys “affect” which generates in immigrants both positive effects and negative effect. Finally, as a focal point in narrative, the musical instrument sees immigrants’ abandonment of their mother culture and cultural identity. In novel, a green button diatonic accordion is the central narrative character, connecting the stories of immigrants in more than a hundred years. With a function to satisfy human entertainment in daily life, the accordion is abundant in cultural memory, the affective interaction between thing and man as well as multiple cultural identity. It is a field in which the marginal immigrants’ culture is competing, negotiating and communicating with American mainstream culture.
