A Study on the Trauma Narrative in Douglas Stuart’s Shuggie Bain

小说《舒吉·贝恩》是苏格兰作家道格拉斯·斯图尔特发表的首部长篇小说，故事情节围绕一对困境中的母子展开，讲述了阿格尼丝在社会底层艰难求存的经历和工人阶级少年舒吉的成长故事。本文基于创伤理论和叙事学理论，揭示小说中呈现的创伤经验，分析主人公为实现创伤复原所付出的努力，进而探究小说进行创伤叙事的意义。
Shggie Bain is the first novel published by the Scottish writer Douglas Stuart. The novel is centred on a mother and son in a state of distress, and depicts the experiences of Agnes’s arduous journey to survive at the bottom of the society and the coming-of-age journey of Shuggie. This article employs the theories of trauma and the theory of narratology to identify the various traumatic experiences depicted in the novel. It also examines the protagonists’ attempts to recover from trauma and explores the significance of the novel’s trauma narrative.
