《论语》一书从命名就显得意义非凡，这部书为什么被称为《论语》也是我们值得关注的问题。其命名方式有别于先秦其他作品，其中历代学者争议较大的“论”字有议论、编次、论难、选择、至理大道等意义，可以看出论语或是以内容定名。《论语》和《孟子》虽都属儒家经典，从命名来看，已经显示了二者相异之处。《孟子》以人物命名，作品在表现主要人物性格以及文本内容上与《论语》存在差别，从命名角度探析二者的区别不失为一种研究方式。
