|
Abstract:
The consonant system of old Khmer evolved into the consonant system of modern Khmer through processes of voicing devoicing and voicing aspiration, which led to the emergence of two sound ranges in the language. To meet the needs of expression, vowels underwent compensatory changes, and began to split, monophthongs became diphthongs, and a large number of diphthong phonemes emerged, causing the number of vowel phonemes to multiply. In this paper, the phonological systems of modern Khmer and old Khmer will be described separately from the perspective of consonants, vowels, and syllables, in order to better understand the evolution of the Khmer language.
