《西游记》是明代小说家吴承恩创作的一部浪漫主义章回体小说，是我国四大名著之一。明末清初，随着西方传教士来华传播天主教，我国的文化典籍也通过传教士、汉学家等人的翻译而传入西方世界。在众多英文译本中，《西游记》以其起伏跌宕的剧情和妙趣横生的人物形象吸引着海内外的读者。本文探讨了《西游记》成功的因素，介绍了《西游记》英译版的研究现状，并讨论了《西游记》英译版对中国传统文化的传播作用，以期为中国文化在海外的传播做出贡献。
Journey to the West, written by Wu Cheng’en, the novelist of Ming Dynasty, stands as a romanticized chapter-novel and holds a revered position as one of China’s Four Great Masterpieces of novels. During the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, as Western missionaries came to China to spread Catholicism, China’s cultural literature were also introduced to the Western world through the translations of the missionaries, sinologists and others. Amidst the translations, Journey to the West captivates western readers with its dramatic plots and crafted characters. This article delves into the factors underpinning the success of this novel and provides an overview of current research on its English translations. Meanwhile, it examines the pivotal role of the translated versions in disseminating traditional Chinese culture so as to further the global outreach of Chinese cultural heritage.
