“It’s All About Spirit, Not Stacking”—An analysis of Yuan Mei’s View of the Book of Songs and the Xingling Theory in Suiyuan Shihua

袁枚在《随园诗话》中将《诗经》作为诗歌典范，赞扬其“都是性灵，不关堆垛”，从《诗经》的本质特征、思想内容、体式格律等方面体现其抒写真实性情的特点，注重《诗经》所原本具有的抒情文本特质，肯定《诗经》中所抒写的人的正当情欲，从而为袁枚的“性灵说”寻找经典依据，为构建其“性灵说”的话语体系而服务。
Yuan Mei takes the Book of Songs as a model of poetry in Suiyuan Shihua, and praises it as “It’s all about spirit, not stacking”, reflecting the characteristics of its true temperament in terms of its essential characteristics, ideological content, style and other aspects, and paying attention to the original lyrical text characteristics of the Book of Songs. Thus, we can find the classical basis for Yuan Mei’s “Xingling Theory” and serve for the construction of his “Xingling Theory” discourse system.
