|
Abstract:
Klara and the Sun is a new work by Kazuo Ishiguro following his Nobel Prize win. Upon its release, it garnered widespread attention in the literary and critical circles. Therefore, this paper aims to take a narrative theory perspective, particularly focusing on non-human narratives, to examine Klara’s narrative function and significance within the novel. This analysis intends to contemplate the human-machine relationship, societal crises, and ethical dilemmas in the post-human era. The research methods employed in this paper are textual analysis and comparative analysis. The study reveals that the artificial intelligence character Klara in Klara and the Sun belongs to the narrative type of artificial intelligence figures. On the story level, Klara serves both as an actor and an observer, while on the discourse level, she simultaneously acts as a narrator and an observer. The examination of Klara’s non-human narrative function not only reflects her exploration of her own identity and value but also encapsulates the human introspection, as well as cognitive, emotional, and ethical representations.
