|
Abstract:
In the current educational context, educators are increasingly aware of the necessity to transform the traditional language classroom into a space that is both analytical and liberating. The core of this transformation lies in developing learners’ critical thinking skills and stimulating their initiative in the learning process, which in turn leads to the formation of critical language awareness. 20 undergraduate English majors were recruited to participate in an extra-curricular activity, in which they were asked to collect linguistic landscape texts within the boundaries of a city’s scenic area, and were guided to participate in analysing the linguistic landscape texts. By carefully analyzing the video recordings of learners’ interactions as well as the textual data generated during the activities, the study shows that the linguistic landscape pedagogy helps to develop learners’ critical thinking skills in different dimensions, but the higher-order thinking categories of evaluation and creation were rarely involved.
