Abstract:

文章选取中国典籍译者汪榕培的《牡丹亭》英译本为研究对象,以剧中与杜丽娘相关的容貌类描述、语言类描述以及评价类描述的英译作为研究语料,在功能对等理论的指导下,考察译者对于《牡丹亭》中杜丽娘人物形象的再现方式,探明译者再现人物形象的英译过程及其背后的合理性。分析发现,汪译文主要采用意译、增词以及调整句式结构方式再现杜丽娘的姿态神情;通过传达人物语言中隐含的情感再现杜丽娘语言的委婉含蓄;借助直译突出杜丽娘的貌美、意译披露杜丽娘的羞涩与惆怅。
The article selects the English translation of The Peony Pavilion by Wang Rongpei, a translator of Chinese canonical books, and takes the English translations of Du Liniang’s appearance, language, and evaluation descriptions as the corpus of the study. Under the guidance of the theory of func-tional equivalence, the article examines the way in which the translator reproduces Du Liniang’s characterization in The Peony Pavilion, and probes into the process of the translator’s reproduction of her characterization as well as the reasonableness of the process behind the translator’s repro-duction of her characterization. It is found that Wang’s translation mainly adopts paraphrasing, adding words and adjusting sentence structure to reproduce Du Liniang’s gestures and expressions; reproduces Du Liniang’s euphemistic and implicit language by conveying the emotions implicit in the character’s language; highlights Du Liniang’s beauty with the help of direct translation; and dis-closes Du Liniang’s shyness and despondency with the help of paraphrasing.
