Abstract:

Objective: To examine the effect of feminist identity development on objectified body consciousness and its negative impact among young women. Method: 189 young women were recruited through Internet and randomly assigned into experimental group (arousing feminist identity first) and con-trol group (arousing objectified body consciousness first) according to answer sequence. Measure-ments were conducted using the Feminist Identity Composite and Objectified Body Consciousness Scale. Result: Compared to control group, there was a significant negative correlation between the developmental stage of feminist identity and objectified body consciousness in experimental group. Significant differences in body surveillance and body shame were found among different develop-mental stages of feminist identity. Conclusion: By arousing feminist identity, low developmental stage of feminist identity showed reinforcement on body shame, while high developmental stage of feminist identity has a protection on body surveillance. However, this effect may not exist when arousing objectified body consciousness.
