Abstract:

In this study, we classify judgements on modesty valence phrases using the conventional stroop experimental paradigm. Experiment 1 looked into the size metaphor of modesty by having subjects categorize words presented on a computer screen with various font sizes. The results showed that subjects responded significantly faster to words with high modesty validity than to words with low modesty validity, with no main effect on word size. Experiment 2 looked into the up-down metaphor of modesty by having subjects classify words that were displayed above or below the computer screen. The results showed that subjects were significantly faster at classifying words with high modesty validity and words that were displayed above the screen than words with low modesty validity and words that were displayed below the screen. At the superficial level of processing, modesty was found to be unrelated to the ideas of “top and bottom” and “size”, and future research may look into whether they are related at a deeper level of processing.
