|
Abstract:
Identity study has been one of the key words in the 21st century western literature. In the novel Romola, George Eliot describes the identity anxiety and identity crisis of an individual in the tor-rent of historical change by depicting the eponymous heroine Romola’s two departures and re-turns. Romola emphasizes the impact of the social environment on individual identity, and re-shapes the value of individual existence through the construction of social identity, completing the personal growth of the heroine Romola after her two returns. This return not only symbolizes the gradual improvement of Romola’s self-consciousness, but also reflects Eliot’s ethical outlook based on the sense of empathy and responsibility in order to alleviate the contradictions and conflicts of the individual after entering the modern society.
