|
Abstract:
Previous studies have explored the relationship between maternal depression and maternal par-enting stress, but the mechanism between these two variables needs further exploration. Parental reflective functioning defined as the parent’s ability to reflect upon his/her own and his/her child’s internal mental experience in terms of underlying mental states (such as thoughts, feelings, de-sires) plays an extremely important role in the parenting process. The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between maternal depression and maternal parenting stress, and to explore the role of parental reflective functioning in this relationship. One hundred and eighty-three mothers with infant under 36 months completed the relevant questionnaires. Analysis revealed that: 1) maternal depression significantly positively predicts maternal parenting stress; 2) maternal reflec-tive functioning plays a mediating role between maternal depression and maternal parenting stress. The results indicate that maternal depression influences maternal parenting stress through the mediation of maternal reflective functioning.
