Abstract:

George Bernard Shaw’s play Pygmalion is a popular romantic drama in which Eliza is transformed from an ordinary flower-seller, trained by the linguist Higgins, into a lady of elegant manners and pure voice. This transformation leads to a confusion of Eliza’s social and ethical identity, which ends with Eliza successfully escaping this confusion and finding her own direction in life. Using eco-feminist criticism to compare Elisa to a pristine, untouched forest, this paper analyses how Elisa’s feminine consciousness is awakened step by step, and how her ethical identity is transformed, lost and returned. Through two dimensions of analysis and exploration, it reveals the mystery of Elisa’s awakening of feminine consciousness and return to her ethical identity, and also attempts to find a model of harmonious coexistence between man and nature-male and female.
