|
Abstract:
This paper reviews international seminal empirical research on linguistic and cultural content in foreign language textbook. Firstly, the review of studies on vocabulary in textbooks addresses three research approaches: vocabulary load, number of high-frequency words occurring in text-books, and repetitions of words in textbooks. The review of studies examining pragmatic content in textbooks then addresses those focusing on how textbooks present common speech acts including requests, apologies and refusals. Lastly, the paper reviews research on cultural content in textbooks that from three perspectives: gender representation, representation of target language cultures and neoliberalism. The overall findings of the review show that there is a gap between the presentation of linguistic and cultural content in foreign language textbooks and research insights obtained in the relevant areas, on the basis of which the paper concludes with making suggestions for textbook writing, teacher education and future research direction.
