Abstract:

British playwright Harold Pinter’s The Caretaker focuses on the problems of British society after the Second World War. In this play, Davis, Aston and Mick are epitomized by the underclass and special groups of society who are lost facing the new environment, which generates mental ab-normalities. This paper is based on psychiatry principles, not only analyzing the absurd language and behavior of the characters in the play, but also linking mental illness with the representation of society in the observation and attention. In general, it outlines Pinter’s concern for life of the marginalized and real demands of the underclass. It is Pinter’s deep compassion for the current human plight that shows his courage to take up the responsibility of justice and reflects the rich humanist care of the play.
