|
Abstract:
In retrospect, there is no consensus on the relationship between covert narcissism and prosocial behavior, and the role of conspicuous characteristics in narcissistic admiration, narcissistic riva-lry and prosocial behavior has not been well revealed. In this study, the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, Hypersensitivity Narcissistic Scale, Narcissistic Admiration and Narcissistic Rivalry Scale, and simulated charity donation scenarios and prosocial product purchase scenarios were used to explore the moderating effect of conspicuous characteristics on the relationship between different types of narcissism and prosocial behaviors. The results showed that conspicuous characteristics moderated the relationship between covert narcissism and prosocial behavior (Study 1 and Study 2). Overt narcissism, covert narcissism and conspicuous characteristics together affect individuals’ willingness to engage in prosocial behaviors (Study 1). Conspicuous characteristics moderated the relationship between narcissistic admiration and prosocial behavior (Study 2); conspicuous characteristics did not moderate the relationship between narcissistic rivalry and prosocial behavior, but narcissistic rivalry moderated the effect of conspicuous characteristics on prosocial behavior (Study 2). This study has important implications for guiding narcissists to engage in prosocial behaviors advocated by society.
