“The Pursuit of Happyness” tells the inspiring story of Chris Gardner, a salesman whose wife runs away from home. Although he doesn’t have a good job and has no place to live, he still pursues happiness alone with his son and finally becomes a successful stock market trader. This study selects the conversations of characters in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and analyzes their conversational implicature from the perspectives of the Cooperative Principle and the Polite Principle. Sometimes communicators choose to abide by the Polite Principle and violate the cooperative Principle for specific purposes and better communication. Analyzing the conversational implicature of the characters in “The Pursuit of Happyness” based on the Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle can deepen people’s understanding of characters and enlighten people on how to communicate more effectively in real life.
