The Impact of Constituency Bursary Provision Timing on School Efficiency of Secondary Schools in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of constituency bursary provision timing on school efficiency of secondary schools in Trans-Nzoia County, Kenya. The study used a descriptive survey research design. The study was used the Human Capital Theory as advanced by Becker and the socialist economics of education theory as propounded by Louis Blanc while looking at family background as timing for awarding bursary. The target population was 77,589 persons, that is, 77,322 students, 257 principals, 5 sub-county directors of education and 5 sub-county constituency bursary fund chairpersons. Glen model was used to derive a sample of 384 respondents with 297 students, 77 principals, 5 SCDE and 5 CBF. Questionnaire and interview schedules were used to collect data for the study. Validity was done by consultation with supervisors whose opinion was used to make corrections while validity was done by pilot study and coefficient of 0.7 obtained. Quantitative data was analysed using inferential statistic while qualitative data was analysed as themes emerged. The findings were; there was a significant (p = .01; α = .05) relationship between constituency bursary provisions and internal efficiency in secondary in Kenya. The findings will enable timely provision of funds to schools to enable efficiency provision of services. The study concluded that government should ensure timely provision of funds to improve on its efficiency. The study recommended stakeholder involvement to ensure timely provision of funds.
