|
Abstract:
Based on the corpus of 30 news reports on COVID-19 and taking People’s Daily as an example, this paper mainly uses conceptual metaphor theory to investigate the metaphorical use and characteristics of Chinese official media reports on COVID-19 from the emergence of the epidemic to the normalization stage. It is found that there are three main metaphors, that is, war metaphor, competition metaphor and magic metaphor, among which war metaphor appears the most frequently and accounts for the most proportion. There are abundant sub-metaphors in competition metaphors. In addition, all these metaphors are deployed to describe the outbreak and relevant people and events in terms of those well known and understood to the public, explaining the outbreak and persuading the public to join to fight the epidemic with firm believe in victory. This paper is expected to provide some reference for the media to report the news related to public emergencies through metaphor.
