The Influence of the Confucian Gentleman Personality on the Process of Folk Deified Figures—Taking “Belief in Guan Yu” as an Example

儒家君子人格是肩负社会重任，以“仁”为核心，“内圣外王”为修养标准的人格典型。关羽信仰是中国拥有巨大影响力的神化人物案例，关羽信仰的重要转折点是南北宋抗战时期官方意识形态认可下，关羽信仰正统化和士人阶层复兴儒学、推崇君子人格为理想人格的双重作用推动的。同时，体现儒家思想对民众造神心理的影响。神化的人物原型拥有儒家文化下的君子人格成为民间神化人物的潜在标准。
The Confucian gentleman personality is a typical personality that shoulders the important task of society, which takes “benevolence” as the core and “inner saint and outer king” as the cultivation standard. Belief in Guan Yu is a case of deified figure with great influence in China. The important turning point of Belief in Guan Yu was induced by the dual effects of Belief in Guan Yu orthodoxy under the official ideological recognition and scholar class revival Confucianism which respected gentleman personality as an ideal personality during the war in the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties. At the same time, it reflects the influence of Confucianism on people’s God-making psychology. The deified figure prototype has the gentleman personality under the Confucian culture, which has become the potential standard of folk deified figures.
