Purpose: Social media appearance anxiety refers to individuals’ anxiety about whether their ap-pearance on social media is in line with the aesthetical standard of others, as well as the focus and negative expectation of other people’s evaluation, resulting in worry, tension, anxiety and other negative emotions. Developing social media appearance anxiety scale provides a measuring tool for the study of this important social psychological concept. This study aims to develop a social media appearance anxiety scale and test its reliability and validity. Method: First, the research broadly collected researches about appearance anxiety and the use of social media, and worked out the theoretical dimensions and some items of the scale. Then a scale of 20 items was formed by conducting semi-structured interviews, combined with the experts’ opinions. Third, the research conducted a preliminary test and modified the original scale after project analysis and exploratory factor analysis. Finally, a scale of 12 items was formed. Then participants were retested to measure the reliability and validity of the scale. Results: after inspection, the social media appearance anxiety scale of 12 items 1) has good internal consistency reliability and retest reliability; 2) has good content validity; 3) has good structure validity. Conclusions: The social media appearance anxiety scale developed in this study has good reliability and validity, and is suitable for the testing of relevant researches.
