English Translation in Zhang Peiji’s Selected Modern Chinese Essays from the Perspective of Conceptual Metaphor Theory

张培基《英译中国现代散文选》一书的译文广受业界好评，是现代散文英译的典范。本文借概念隐喻理论，整理了文本中的概念隐喻，从结构、方位和本体三层次深入探究，指出其作为中国现代散文对外翻译中的翻译方法。研究发现，现代散文隐喻英译呈现无形化为有形、有形化为有形两大趋势。前者重神似，后者偏形似。在翻译实操层面，前者重意译、改译、仿译，旨在再现原文神韵；后者重直译，借描绘形象来引发人们的联想。在源域和目标域的对应过程中，译者当从认知方式入手，探究源域背后的文化联想与心理机制，结合语境做出最恰当的选择。
The translation in Zhang Peiji’s Selected Modern Chinese Essays has been widely praised by the literature circle. With the support of the conceptual metaphor theory, this paper sorts out the conceptual metaphors in the text, analyzes from three levels of structure, orientation and ontology, and points out translation methods. It is found that, the translation of metaphors in modern Chinese essays shows two major trends: the transformation from intangible to tangible, and the transformation from tangible to tangible. On the practical level, the former focuses on free translation, variation translation and imitation translation, aiming at reproducing the charm of the original text. The latter emphasizes literal translation, evoking people’s associations by depicting images. The translator should explore the cultural association and psychological mechanism behind the source domain from the cognitive mode, so as to make the most appropriate choices in combination with the contexts.
