Investigation of Causes of Mathematics Fear and Suggestions for Solution Starting with Primary Education in Terms of Teachers' Opinions

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to reveal the reasons and solution proposals for students’ fears towards mathematics by primary school and mathematics teachers’ points of view. Within this purpose, case study that is among qualitative research methods was used in the study. The participants of the study consisted of 4 primary school teachers working at a primary school and 7 mathematics teachers working at a high school in Van province in 2017-2018 academic year and while determining the participants purposive sampling was used. As data collection tool semi-structured interview questions were applied. The interviews were recorded with audio recording devices to avoid loss of data. Firstly the interviews were converted transcript and the datas were analyzed a content analysis method. As a result of the analyzes it was seen that among primary school teachers and mathematics teachers, the main causes of fear of mathematics are environmental factors, course content, student and teacher attitudes. It was also the result of primary teachers that this fear is not at the level of primary education and that the class level has increased. Also had been found that reading-writing-based education in primary education to cause lack of basic mathematics and to fear of mathematics in students by mathematics teachers' opinion. In order to overcome this fear suggested that teacher-student-parent cooperation, attitudes and solutions for the improvement of the curriculum in the system is presented
