Ali Pertek (P?rtük) Bey’s Military Activities from the Süleyman Period MarinersKeywords: Ali Pertek,Ali P?rtük,Cerbe Ku?atmas?,Sigetvar Seferi,Kocaeli Sancakbeyi Abstract: Ali Bey who referred to as Ali Pertek and Ali P?rtük in the sources of the period, was appointed to Kocaeli Sanjak-beg on 21 June 1559. He was previously Rhodes sanjak-beg. Ali Bey, a pirate-based sailor like Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha and Turgut Reis, was a good naval commander. Ali Bey, with Piyale Pasha in 1559, joined navy expedition in the Mediterranean. He took part with the Kocaeli soldiers in the Jerba Siege of 1560 and showed great heroism. He was assigned to the service of the Aegean islands and the coast guard during the return of Jerba. After Ali Bey, Süheyl Bey was appointed to Kocaeli sanjak-beg. In 1565 Süheyl Bey joined the Maltese Siege with the navy. Upon the failure of the encirclement, Ali Bey was re-appointed to Kocaeli sanjak-beg in June 1565. In the fall of 1565, he was assigned to the Aegean Sea to receive news from the enemy ships and ensure that the Egyptian vessels bringing the goods to Istanbul through the Aegean are safely protected from enemy and pirate attacks and enter safely through the ?anakkale Straits. Ali Bey, who successfully completed these missions, joined the Kocaeli sanjak soldiers together in 1566 as the commander of the Ottoman Navy to the Danube River in Sigetvar Expedition, the last campaign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. Ali Bey who was mentioned with great praise during both the voyage and the siege, was martyred in the heroic battle in front of Szigetvár Castle.
