Abstract:

The subject of this study is the history of black glazed pottery from the Achaemenid period at Seyit?mer Mound. The Achaemenid period settlement dates back to the 6th century and continued through the second half of the 4th century. Early examples of black glazed pottery from the 5th century were found in the same context as samples imported from Attica, which is important because it shows that some of the locally produced ceramics are imitation works inspired by imported products. Taken together, the samples imported from Attica and the imitations/local productions examined in this study indicate that Seyit?mer Mound was directly or indirectly involved in a commercial-cultural relationship with Continental Greece. The study concludes that black-glazed gray earthen ware ceramics were introduced at Seyit?mer Mound during the Achaemenid period and continued until the middle of the Hellenistic period
