Abstract:

The word petroglyph actually means carving on the stone. This word, in Turkey Turkish, means depictions on rock, plates on rock, rock art, stone carving and it is mentioned alongside with rock art. In fact, this process is carried out on stones, rocks and caves by means of engraving, forging, scraping and painting, and the processed petroglyphs are transforming their places into an open-air museum. It is considered as a means of expression, communication, or expressive writings. In other words, rock arts express a feeling and thought. These emotions and thoughts often contain material (animal, shaman, celestial bodies, hunting scenes, warriors and battle scenes), and spiritual motifs. While most of these motifs tell about mythological history, they give information about the social life and thoughts of the old communities. For this reason, the rock arts and the areas where they are located were considered as a sacred area. When we look at the end of the XX.century, there is an increase in interest in rock arts and studies on the subject. This increase is also evident in the number of studies. However, researchers often do this research within the framework of shamanism and animism. These studies were started with the fact that the function of the paintings was seen as a communication tool with religious dimension, and mythical, epic, and even historical clues. Studies should be continued by taking advantage of different disciplines. Although petroglyphs are often evaluated in terms of the semiology associated with religion and ritual, in this situation, petroglyphs, which provide clues about ordinary everyday events, increase the importance of Ethnographic history of Inner Asia
