Theatrical Aspects of Hierarchy in the Classical Islamic Period State Formation

As a form of differentiation, the state creates a hierarchical order in every society in which it emerges. For the general acceptance of this hierarchical order by the society, there is a symbolic arrangement corresponding to it. That is, the complexity of the hierarchical order in the sense of the state in a society requires a complex symbolic order that corresponds to it. Here, this order, where people, positions, places exist with their symbolic meanings, rather than the real meaning, creates a theatrical space. There are decors, costumes, roles and a scenario in this theatrical space, and these theatrical elements are symbolic representation of the real world. When we look at the pre-modern classical Islamic state orders, it is seen that the level of nationalization and symbolic expression develops together. This order, which runs parallel to the real hierarchy, but in a sense creates a symbolic world independent from it, has a distinct theatrical functioning. The symbolic schemes of state formation have common points because of Islam which unifies them, but also include local motifs in connection with the geography in which states emerged
