Retrospective Evaluation of Treatment of Antebrachium Fractures by Intramedullary Pins in Stray Dogs and Cats in Istanbul: 2014-2017

Abstract:

The radius and ulna come together to form the antebrachium. Antebrachium fractures are frequently seen in cats and dogs and different treatment options are available. These bones can be broken together or broken one by one. The anatomic location and type of the fracture, the breed of the animals and preferred treatment modality can effect the prognosis. Intramedullary pin application is not recommended for antebrachium fractures due to the shape of the radius and joint damage. The aim of this study is to retrospectively evaluate the healing status and functional recovery in the radius and ulna fractures that have to be performed intramedullary pin application in cats and dogs. The study consisted of 62 dogs and 23 cats with antebrachium fractures. Distal diaphyseal fractures also were more common (42 cases). According to the fracture shape and dislocation, intramedullary pins were applied only to the radius in 41 cases and to both radius and ulna in 44 cases. After osteosynthesis, healing of bone and functional evaluations were followed-up for 1-6 months.
