The Impact of Early Pregnancy-Period Nausea and Vomiting on the Anxiety Level

Abstract:

Aim: This study has been conducted descriptively to determine the impact of early pregnancy-period nausea and vomiting on the anxiety level in pregnancy. Method: The population of the study was constituted by the pregnancy polyclinic of a hospital situated in the province of Karaman and the expectant mothers who come to the obstetrics school. The sample size was determined as 246 persons. In the collection of data, a questionnaire form and Beck Anxiety scale were used. In determining the data, non-parametric tests of Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests, Spearman Correlation and Regresyon analysis were used. Results: In the study, The Beck Anxiety point average of the expectant mothers taking part in the study was found as 13.4±9.7. It was determined that 70.7% of the expectant mothers experienced nausea and vomiting; that, of the expectant mothers experiencing nausea and vomiting, that 11.8% of the expectant mothers experience severe-level anxiety. It was ascertained that a difference takes place between expectant mothers’ pregnancy experience, nausea and vomiting experienced in pregnancy, trimester of termination of nausea and vomiting, and the daily works, social lives, spouse-relations of the expectant mothers experiencing nausea and vomiting and their anxiety level (p?0.05). Conclusion: It was found in the study that the early pregnancy period nausea and vomiting has impact on anxiety level. Health professionals may be advised to be more cautious about anxiety and strengthen support factors in nausea and vomiting infants
