Ulukule Village During The Ottoman PeriodKeywords: Tunceli,?emi?gezek,Ulukale,k?y Abstract: In this study, the administrative, demographic and economic structure of Ulukale Village, a rural settlement unit in ?emi?gezek District of Tunceli province, was examined. Ottoman archive documents were used as the main sources for this manuscript. Ulukale village, which had been administered by ?emi?gezek in 1515, was also the center of nahiyeh, the historical castle, the mill, the paint shop and the surrounding villages. The settlement of the Muslim Turkish population was realized between 1524-1540. But there is no sufficient information about where they came from and tribe. Ulukale was a typical Anatolian settlement in which agriculture and animal husbandry were at the forefront during the Ottoman period. The main products in the village were wheat, barley, millet, grapes and cotton. Due to the availability of the geographical structure of the village livestock was also made widely. In addition to large and small animals, beekeeping was among the economic activities of the village. Today, however, the most important source of livelihood in Ulukale mul-berry cultivation was not widespread during the Ottoman period. Therefore, it was possible to make this product feel its weight in the village economy during the Republican period. The vineyards that were present before in the village have disappeared over time. Ulukale's historical structures consist of a mausoleum belonging to the mosque, church, fountain and Ferruh Bey, with an old castle ruin. However, structures other than the fountain and the recently restored Ferruh Bey mausoleum are in ruins today. In the village, the mosque was built twice during the Ottoman period, the first was defeated by the time and the second was burned and turned into ruins during the terrorist attack in 1994. Today's mosque was built in the area where the village was founded and there is no historical significance. However, the village settlement, which was built under a steep hill, burned down with its mosque, and there was almost nothing left from old houses
