Teachers’ Opinions About Building and Using Classroom Libraries in Primary School

Abstract:

The primary school period is very important in the acquisition of reading and working habits. classroom libraries in primary schools in Turkey 22.8.2001/24501 is formed according to the regulations of article 5 school libraries. In the literature, it is seen that there is not enough research about the creation, use and operation of libraries in primary school classes. It is known that classroom teachers organize the process for the use of classroom libraries. In this context, the aim of this study is to discuss with the classroom teachers who work in primary schools and to determine their opinions about the creation and use of classroom libraries. This research is a qualitative study to determine the views of classroom teachers. In this context, the study is a descriptive study based on qualitative research techniques. The study group consisted of 38 class teachers working in 8 state primary schools in Hendek district of Sakarya province. In order to collect data, a semi-structured interview form developed by the researcher was used. Interviews with teachers were analyzed by content analysis. The content analysis of the interviews with the teachers was conducted. As a result of the research, classroom library is found in almost every class, there are usually 50-100 books in the class library; that the books are mostly provided by donation, teacher purchase and transfer from previous classrooms, where the books are recorded in the e-school system and in the library list; students usually read 1-2 books per week, the library is usually behind, behind, or behind the teacher's desk, the most important problem is the irregularity of the library, and students like to read stories and fairy tales, teachers, students to read books to understand by asking questions about the book, making a summary and telling the book
