OSTEOPOROSIS AND ITS TREATMENT

Osteoporosis, defined as a systemic disease, causing increase in bone fragility and risk of fracture, low bone mineral density and disruption of bone microstructure, has become an important health problem in the world and in our country as well. This disease affects humans, especially women in postmenopausal period. It reduces the quality of life standards with the fractures and increases economical and social burden, morbidity and mortality as well. The increase in the average life span increases the incidence of osteoporosis together with chronic diseases. In the treatment of osteoporosis the aim is to prevent the fractu-res. Medical treatment of osteoporosis includes a wide range of drug groups including calcium, vitamin D, bisphosphonates, strontium ranelate, hormone replacement drugs, selective estrogen receptor modulators, calcitonin, parathormone, deno-sumab, cathepsin K inhibitors. Additionally proper nutrition, exercise and physical treatment have also important role in osteoporosis therapy. Diagnosis and therapy are rapidly develo-ping with nanotechnological and pharmacogenetical research works. In addition developments in computer science play an important role concomitant to medical therapy, physical treatment and rehabilitation
