Abstract:

In our research study, it is aimed to compare the gender-based attitudes of the students in secondary schools and high schools towards physical education and sports education. In line with the objective of the study, the universe of the research was composed of female and male students in secondary schools and high schools in Elmal? district of Antalya province. The sample; using cluster sampling as a probabilistic sampling method, Muhammed Hamdi Yaz?r High School was determined as the high school sample and Muhammed Hamdi Yaz?r and Ak?ay Secondary School was determined as the secondary school sample. Thus, the sample of the research study was composed of 150 students (75 males and 75 females) in high school, and 300 students (150 males and 150 females) in secondary school, adding up to 450 students voluntarily participating in our research. In our research, "Physical Education and Sports Attitude Scale (PESAS)", which was developed by Demirhan and Altay (2001), was used. The scale is composed of 24 items, 12 of which are positive and 12 of which are negative. The highest score of the scale is 120, and the lowest 24. While higher scores denote more positive attitudes towards physical education and sports, lower scores represent the opposite. The scale is a 5 point likert scale, and the statements are (1 = definitely agree, 2 = I don't agree, 3 = Neutral, 4 = I agree, 5 = definitely agree). The Chronbach Alpha reliability coefficient of the scale was determined as 0.93. The internal consistency coefficient of the scale was calculated as 0.92. Descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency (n), percentage (%), arithmetic mean (X), and standard deviation (Ss) were used in the analysis of the personal data in the study. Since normal distribution and homogeneity conditions were not met, Mann-Whitney U test, which was among the non-parametric tests, was implemented for the dual groups. The results were evaluated at (0.05) significance level. As the conclusion, it was determined that there was statistically no significant difference among the male and female students (p>0.05). It is suggested that the perceptions of the male and female students towards physical education and sports education lesson are similar
