Abstract:

Backround : The aim of this study was to evaluate the distribution of rotavirus and enteric adenovirus prevalences in patients admitted to our private hospital with diarrhea within three years. Materials and Methods: In this study, 789 patients aged between 1 and 61 years who presented with diarrhea between January 2016-December 2018 were evaluated retrospectively. Rotavirus and enteric adenovirus antigens were investigated using chromotographic method in fecal samples taken from these patients. The demographic data and clinical findings of the patients were evaluated. Results: Of the 789 patients with diarrhea, 422 (53.5%) were female and 367 (46.5%) were male. Enteric adenovirus was detected in 45 patients (5.8%), and rotavirus was detected in 25 (3.2%). While number of rotavirus-positive cases were the lowest in 2016 (1.5%), there was an insignificant increase in the other two years (3.8%, 3.7%) (p>0.05). Number of enteric adenovirus-positive patients peaked in 2017, and the prevalence was found similar in the other two years (5,2%, 4,2%). Seven (28%) of the inpatient-treated rotavirus cases were followed up for a maximum of three days, and seven (15.5%) of enteric adenovirus-positive patients were hospitalized for a maximum of four days. The most common symptoms in patients were nausea, vomiting and fever, and abdominal pain was the least common complaint. Dehydration was significantly higher in rotavirus-positive cases (p<0.05). Inpatients were treated with parenteral fluid according to their degree of dehydration. In the study, rotavirus-positive cases were found to be distributed in cold months, and enteric adenovirus positive patients were distributed throughout the year with a peak in December. Conclusion: The frequency of rotavirus was found to be low in patients presenting with diarrhea to our hospital. There was no significant change in the frequency of rotavirus caused diarrhea in terms of years, and the frequency of enteric adenovirus caused diarrhea changed due to regional causes. We concluded that the diagnose might be confusing because fatigue, nausea and vomiting was the most common symptoms in adenovirus-positive patients, and dehydration, nausea and vomiting was the most common compliants in rotavirus-positive cases. We also concluded that Ag test could be a useful tool for a clinician in the differential diagnose
