Logistics Village Applications in European Union Countries and Turkey, and Selection of Suitable Location for Establishment

Logistics is a sector that has been developing rapidly and its significance is increasing day by day. Logistics villages that the relevant activities gathered with logistics, gained strategic importance. While the studies on logistics village applications began in Turkey in 2006, when State Railways of the Republic of Turkey had decided to operate that, the European Union countries have been studying that since 1960’s. In this study the logistic villages in European Union and in Turkey are compared and the properties of completed and ongoing logistic villages in Turkey are mentioned the preference of location selection. The studies about the logistic villages which are come to the fore later in our country compared to the European Union countries are generally limited with State Railways of the Republic of Turkey studies. Local governments, State Railways of the Republic of Turkey and private sector should cooperate in this area. In addition, logistic village centers in our country are classified according to three criteria: Having railways, highways and major ports, Connection with large settlements, Having border with neighbour countries. In the future studies, the determination of high potential logistic village centers using Multi Criteria Decision Making techniques will contribute to the related studies
