Ibni Yahya and His Poetic Work "Hikayat-i Avrat"

Particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries, numerous religious mathnawis were written in Anatolia. These religious mathnawis with epic and didactic qualities were mainly attached to Suleyman Celebi’s Ves？letu’n-Necat. They were reproduced under titles such as "destan, dasitan, hikaye" in such a great amount that it would almost be impossible to determine their number; and they were fondly read by people. Authors of many of these mathnawis are either unknown or there are confusions about the authors. There is a poetic work titled Hikayat-i Avrat, which relatively resembles the mathnawis written in the 14th and 15th centuries. It was written by Ibni Yahya at an unknown date. It is the poetic form of the numerous prose texts that were written to describe the rights of men on women. Ibni Yahya had probably seen these prose texts about men’s rights on women and turned them into poetic form. Prophet Muhammad’s seeing the women in hell on the day of Miraj and his description of their situation, as stated in Mirac-names, takes an important place in all prose and poetic works on this subject. Furthermore, the things described are based on hadiths and Ali is referred as the narrator. It is clear that these works were written with the intention to organize the relationship between men and women in family and in society and to give messages accordingly. Ibni Yahya’s poetic work Hikayat-i Avrat has two manual copies. One of these is registered at ？orum Hasan Pa？a Public Library with No 19 Hk 3206/1 and the other one is maintained in our special library. In this article, the work is studied with respect to its correlation with various prose forms. The copy available in ？orum Hasan Pa？a Public Library was taken as basis since it is tidier.
