A Study on Plastic Bag Damage Prevention and Consumer Awareness

Today, it is known that plastic bags cause harm to humans and animals, especially to the environment. The biggest threat is not the use of plastic, but the size of its use. In general, more than 50% of disposable plastics come from packaging, and most of them are shopping bags. Recognition of the lack of consumer awareness has led to controversy about garbage, and damage to the environment has required attention to plastic bags. There are a number of approaches established to address plastic shopping bags and international waste, and studies are being conducted in many countries. In this study, studies and legislations carried out in many countries in order to prevent damages of plastic bags have been examined. Production costs of plastic bags, long life, increase in diffusion and non-biodegradability seem to have negative effects on the environment and sustainable development. In addition, the “throwaway” approach resulting from rapid consumption makes sustainable consumption difficult. Therefore, separating consumer behaviour from the use of plastic bags is an important problem in the search for sustainable consumption, which is a pioneer in achieving sustainable development.
