The Science of Tafsir in Anmūdhaj al-‘ulūm by Mehmed Shah al-Fanari

In this article, we will examine the part of tafsir in Anmūdhaj al-‘ulūm by Mehmed Shah al-Fanari who was a scholar of the formation period of the Ottoman State. Before that, we will give some information about the author, and a general description of Anmūdhaj al-‘ulūm. Then we will study the part of tafsir in two sections as presented in the book. In the first place, we will have a look at the interpretations of the verses from the beginning to the verse of al-Baqara 2/30 in which God’s speech to angels about the caliphate of human takes place. In this part in which the verses were interpreted in classical way by dividing into different parts, we will point out the intellectual/nutqi power of human that is the missing point of angels. In the second part we will discuss how the Hanafite opinion that the faith nor increases neither decreases could be suitable with Qur’anic verses.
