A Comparative Analysis on the Relationship Between Composition and Performance: Two Songs in Makam Su？zi？na？k

In Turkish Music, there are comprehensive studies on approaches to composition especially regarding the instrumental compositions. These studies usually dig into a composer’s biography and his works like a monography. However, the similarities between the works of contemporary composers have not been frequently analyzed. This study focuses on composition of songs in the 20th century to make a comparison of the relationship between composition and performance. Two songs in makam Su？zina？k from Sadettin Kaynak and Gavsi Baykara, whose life stories share common turning points, are comparatively analyzed resting on the fact that one is frequently performed while the other is neglected. The analysis on form, usu？l and narration finds a theoretical ground for the different performance preferences for similar songs, and offers suggestions for more comprehensive analyses of approaches to composition in Turkish music
