On the Problematization of to What Extent a Headscarved Woman is “Veiled”

One of the controversial issues that have recently been put on Turkey’s agenda by some conservatives and extreme secularists along with discussions on deism is the attack towards the personal rights of a group of headscarved women through vocalizing adverse determinations considering their behaviors, beliefs, and even sincerity of these women. This study, which elucidates the issue with the concept of otherization, suggests that the problem stems actually from a struggle to preserve the established power spaces. On the other hand, due to the changing socio-economic, legal and cultural conditions, this study asserts that the more hybridization of previously more crystalline identities is inevitable. While these discussions are taking place, it is meaningful as well that the issue is carried out on women per se; and on the more disadvantaged situation directed to the woman regarding limiting the personal freedoms.
