Abstract:

“Arba’?n” in Arabic and “Hadith Chihil” in Persian, is entitled to the works containing the forty-selected hadith of the Prophet. Forty hadith studies emerged beginning from the end of the hijri second century and later have developed and became popular in the literature of Arab, Turkish, Iranian and other Muslim nations. throughout history, Muslims have liked the arba’?ns with the form of verse and prose in every geographical region they live in and caringly taught the science of Hadith and the discourses of the Prophet as well as they have always memorized and discussed the hadith narratives in a sense of worship. Especially, some narratives transmitted from the Prophet such as “Allah will resurrect those among my nation who memorize forty hadith about religious orders in the group of faqihs and scholars on the day of resurrection” have influenced in the formation of the tradition of forty-hadith writing among Muslims. Many scholars and poets have classified their works in the form of forty hadith or arba’?n. Of the scholar, writing an arba’?n is Mawlana Idris Bitlis? (d. 926/1520). Idris Bitlis? was a scholar, providing significant services such as consultancy for the Ottoman State in the periods of Bayezid II and Selim I. Bitlis?, succeeding in politics in the Ottoman Palace and more known for his work called "Hasht Bihisht" (Eight Heavens) on the Ottoman history, also left important works in Arabic, Turkish and particularly Persian languages. This article examines Bitlis?’s manuscript namely “Hadith Chihil” and evaluates the hadith narratives in the work particularly in terms of content and soundness
