Abstract:

The individuals face concepts related to time and chronology from the first childhood on. In particular, the words spoken by elders about the time and the calendar play an important role in the learning of the concepts of time and chronology in children. The concept of time is given by the Life Science and Social Studies in primary school, Social Studies and the Republic of Turkey Revolution History and Kemalism in secondary school. The basic concepts related to time and chronology are important for the information of past-time consciousness in students and learning of primary history topics. Missing or not learning these concepts prevents the information of a healthy history consciousness in students. The research was conducted to measure the level of understanding of some basic concepts related to time and chronology in 7th and 8th grade studenst to be able to perceive history topics in social studies cources. In this study, a survey model that used in quantitative research method was used. The universe of the study consists of 7th and 8th grade students attending secondary schools in Sivas during the 2017-2018 academic year. The sample consists of 7th and 8th grade students from 8 secondary schools selected from the city center of Sivas. The scale developed by the researchers consists of 5 sub-titles 28 questions. As a result, because the concept of historical time is abstract, factors such as lack of equipment, tutorial, curriculum, method technique and course book for teaching the concept may be effective in the inadequacy of chronology knowledge and skills of children
