Multi-Axis Approach to the Moral Dramaturgy in Metastasio’s ArtaserseKeywords: Metastasio,Artaserse,Moral Dramaturji Abstract: The purpose of this article is to propose a new approach to the analysis of the moral dramaturgy of Metastasio, one of the most prominent figures of 18th century opera, based on a detailed study of his Artaserse. Moral dramaturgy is the process by which ethical discussions shape the drama. Metastasio was greatly influenced by the Arcadian Academy and Cartesian philosophy, and they can be considered the main pillars on which his dramas stand. This article begins with an overview of the opinions of the most notable scholars on the subject, followed by a detailed analysis of his Artaserse in terms of moral dramaturgy. The results of the analysis are used in a discussion, objecting to approaches that reduce the dramaturgy to dualities, and it is argued that Metastasio’s dramatic construction manifests a multi-axis organization with a values hierarchy that cannot be reduced to dualities. This multi-axis approach is proposed as an alternative way to understand Metastasio’s moral dramaturgy; while claims that adopting a similar approach to his other works will contribute to our understanding of his dramaturgy will be tested in future studies
